- The owners ultimately selected "Metropolitan Baseball Club of New York," or "Mets" in part because it was closely related to the club's already-existing corporate name "New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc.", in part because it hearkened back to "Metropolitans", a historically significant name used by an earlier New York team in the American Association from 1883 to 1887, and in part because its brevity would naturally fit in newspaper headlines. The name was received with broad approval among fans and press.
- It is short for Metropolitans. Metropolitans is just a name for people who live in a Metro area like New York City and all it's burbs, like Brooklyn, The Bronx.
- The design of the uniform also reflects the history of New York baseball. Their home uniform uses pinstripes like the Yankees and the colors of the uniform are based on the colors used by the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants.
- because there is a place called metropolitan I know i know about my mets
- That someone that told you is right. They are called the metropolitans, or mets. This is because new york is the metropolitan city. This means it is the center of everything in that area. Holy cow that one guy wrote a lot. But he copied from a web.
